2020 Envision Pinot Noir
2020 Envision Pinot Noir
Ken's visionary blend from the top Sta. Rita Hills vineyards, including Radian, La Encantada and Sanford & Benedict.
Description
Regal and complex, the 2020 Envision Pinot Noir is a beautiful portrayal of the Sta. Rita Hills appellation. Intense aromas of red plums, cinnamon and vanilla are highlighted by notes of fresh cracked pepper. On the palate, hints of ripe raspberries and black cherries give way to a nicely structured mid-palate, elegant tannins and a long, lingering finish. Additional time in the bottle will add even more layers of complexity to this wine, assuring excellent aging potential.
Vineyard Notes
46% Peake Ranch, 23% La Encantada, 15% Rio Vista, 8% Radian, 8% Sanford & Benedict. Sta. Rita Hills is home to some of the planet’s finest Pinot Noir vineyards. The Pinot Noir grape excels at expressing its natural environment, making each vineyard distinctive in its own way. Envision gives life to the special sense of place that is the Sta. Rita Hills by bringing together the vineyards that best reflect this marine-swept appellation. Ken curates the best lots into an exceptional blend, representing a unique sensory image of Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir.
Production Notes
Fast-paced and at times challenging, Sta Rita Hills’ 2020 vintage was spared from wildfire damage experienced in other areas of California and produced outstanding fruit. Harvest began slightly earlier than normal with our first Pinot Noir pick on August 24. A Labor Day weekend heat spell nudged several of our Pinot Noir vineyards to ideal ripeness and by September 8, about 60% of our grapes had been harvested. Cooler temperatures resumed and we completed the Pinot Noir harvest on September 18. Overall, grapes were beautifully expressive with pure fruit aromatics and flavors, excellent color, and superb structure.
Winemaker Notes
Pinot Noir clusters for this wine were hand sorted before being de-stemmed and gravity fed to fermenters. The must was immediately chilled for a pre-fermentation cold soak where the most beneficial extraction of color, aroma and flavor occurs. During fermentation, concentration was enhanced by gently punching down the cap several times per day. The wine aged 11 months in French oak barrels. Only 64 cases produced.
