Description

Radian always brings a full body and immense complexity to the Pinot Noir grape. 2021’s extended harvest meant incredible development of the grape skins, bringing velvety tannins and beautiful color. The nose brings out black plums alongside savory roasted mushrooms and a hint of cedar. Raspberries and blackberries dominate the palate while the long finish gives a touch of thyme and white pepper. This will be an excellent pairing for braised short ribs with a red wine reduction and creamy polenta.

Vineyard Notes

One of the appellation’s most picturesque and coldest vineyards, this estate is located in the southwest corner of Sta. Rita Hills, unsheltered from direct exposure to cold winds and marine fog from the Pacific Ocean. Planted in 2007, Radian’s soils are Botella clay heavenly laden with shale rock. The austere soils combined with persistent coastal winds result in small clusters and tiny berries, leading to deep, concentrated wines. This wine is composed of 115 and 667 clones.

Production Notes

Sta. Rita Hills experienced an unseasonably cool growing season in 2021, pushing back vineyard development and ripening by an average of two weeks. Our harvest kicked off on September 8, then stalled for two weeks while grapes continued to ripen. Harvest continued well into October concluding with the final harvest of Radian Pinot Noir on October 18. The long hang time has encouraged excellent flavor development, complexity and concentration. The grapes for this wine were harvested on October 6th and 18th.

Winemaker Notes

Pinot Noir clusters for this wine were hand sorted before being de-stemmed and gravity fed to fermenters. The must was immediately chilled for a pre-fermentation cold soak where the most beneficial extraction of color, aroma and flavor occurs. The wine aged 17 months in French oak. The barrel composition included 33% new French oak barrels. The wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered on April 13th, 2023.
