Description
Our 2024 Fiddlestix is a complex and elegant wine, showcasing the full potential of this incredible Sta. Rita Hills vineyard. The aromatics are layered with cherry, violets and earthy notes. The palate showcases an incredible array of flavors from red cherries and strawberries to cinnamon, white pepper and savory roasted mushrooms. Bright ruby red color and silky mouthfeel make this a very inviting glass of Pinot Noir.
Vineyard Notes
Planted near the halfway-point of the Sta. Rita Hills on the north side of Santa Rosa Road, Fiddlestix sits just across from the historic Sanford & Benedict Vineyard. Fog usually lingers until mid-morning and the temperature rarely rises above 75, ensuring cool grapes throughout a lengthy day of sunshine. The soil is well-drained Gazos and Botella clay loam, loaded with chert and Monterey shale, with 96 acres under vine. The block sourced for Ken Brown Wines is planted to the 667 clone.
Production Notes
Despite the ample winter rains clearing salts from the soil and replenishing ground water, yields were low due to cold and windy weather at bud initiation about 16 months prior to this year’s harvest. While low yields are difficult for our growers, this leads to higher quality with advanced phenolic maturity and moderate sugar development. A five-day post Labor Day heat event which raised temperatures into the nineties in the Sta. Rita Hills quickly pushed some blocks to harvest ripeness. Grapes were harvested on September 8th.
Winemaker Notes
Pinot Noir clusters for this wine were hand sorted before being de-stemmed and gravity fed to fermenters. The must was immediately chilled for a pre-fermentation cold soak where the most beneficial extraction of color, aroma and flavor occurs. It was then fermented using native yeasts. The wine aged 10 months in French oak with 40% new barrels. The wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered on August 14th, 2025.
